Making Progress

Realistically, I started this program just a few days ago. I'm substituting a shake for one meal a day, made with the ingredients provided in the Fast Track starter kit ~ turns out breakfast is the best time for me to do that, so no more lattes, especially not with soy milk! Did you know in order to get enough protein at breakfast most women need to eat 2-3 eggs? Seems like a lot, but according to the success coach Julia, that's why the shake is better in the morning because it provides all that protein without making you feel like you're eating too much. I also learned that caffeine affects your adrenal hormones as well as your liver function, which is why she recommends just a little bit if any at all. All kinds of chemistry lessons about the way food interacts with my body ~ fascinating! I've started the bursting technique exercises as well. It's easy to do several times a day ~ I have the little x-ciser out in the living room (it doesn't take up much space) and do it whenever I walk by at least once. I can already feel my muscles tightening up (and complaining a little, but that lets me know it's working). And, with the supplements provided, I also am starting to feel more energetic throughout the day (without the caffeine)! That's really the key, because if I'm tired, I tend to be less productive and creative, and I end up eating or drinking something I shouldn't to perk me up.

So less than a week into it, I am starting to see results. Now the trick is to stick with it ...

Day 2

It's *so* hard to stick to any sort of healthy eating plan when you travel! I did have an orange for breakfast, along with half a bagel w/peanut butter (which technically is not a nut, so peanut butter isn't as good for you as, say, almond butter), but two - yes TWO - lattes! With whole milk!! I did have a salad for lunch, with hummus, so that's a good thing, not sure about the pita bread but it was only two small triangles. Now I'm in a casino in Las Vegas, where I'll do my best to stick to lean proteins, fresh veggies and whole grains (no buffets!). I did not bring any of my shake mix or supplements with me, my bag was full as it is and I didn't have time to count out the correct portions. I'll see how I do without it. Wish me luck!

Day 1

I'm discovering that in the realm of substitutes for things that aren't so good for us, there are lots of choices that can be really confusing! Let's take milk, for example. I don't generally drink cow's milk, although I have found that if I must, full fat is less bothersome that nonfat. Something about whatever it is they take out along with the fat and what's left behind being the thing that bothers me the most. So I've been using soy milk instead, albeit the vanilla soy that tastes better (and is less good for me because of the sweetener added to make it palatable). JJ recommends coconut milk, so I bought some of that to make my latte with (in an ideal world, I wouldn't drink lattes at all, but for the moment, let's stick with the milk issue). In searching for the coconut milk, which is in the baking area, not in the area with the soy milk at our local co-op, I discovered there are several other substances from which milk is made: hemp, almonds and rice, to name just a few. I think I may end up trying them all at some point, but I did post the question on the forum for the Fast Track program, we'll see what those who know better than I have to say about it. Having been under the impression that soy milk was good for me, I'd like some professional advice about these others before I switch!

So I tried the coconut milk, and while it's got the right consistency and doesn't really have a coconut taste (which I'm not fond of), it definitely lacks the flavor and sweetness of the vanilla soy milk - which is the point, I know, but it made the latte somewhat less enjoyable. I will now check the shopping list for appropriate sweeteners and see if that doesn't help.

I suspect it's one of those little things that will make the difference for me, since I eat relatively well already, except for two things that are readily apparent: I don't eat a full breakfast within an hour of waking up (generally it's a latte and a breakfast bar, a piece of toast or some granola - no protein as JJ recommends); and I drink wine every night with dinner.

The next few days will be especially challenging since I am leaving for Las Vegas for a conference for three days. I'll let you know how it goes!

A New Attitude

In an editorial in this morning's newspaper (yes, an actual printed newspaper!), Lewis W. Diuguid provided this quote from President Obama's speech to the NAACP:

"We need a new mindset, a new set of attitudes -- because one of the most durable and destructive legacies of discrimination is the way we've internalized a sense of limitation; how so many in our community have come to expect so little from the world and from themselves ... No one has written your destiny for you. Your destiny is in your hands -- you cannot forget that. That's what we have to teach all of our children. No excuses."

While the President's words were intended for the black community, they apply to all of us who have internalized a sense of limitation. We have come to expect so little from the world, and from ourselves -- we've come to believe that survival is living, that having some comfort and security is the best we can expect from life, and that our dreams are just that -- dreams to be dreamt, but never to be realized. We've handed over responsibility for the outcome to the "other" -- the government, our employer, the community, our family -- anyone but ourselves.

But the truth is, as President Obama pointed out, our destiny is in our hands. It may require making some difficult choices and stepping out of our comfort zones. But isn't that a worthy price to pay for stepping into our greatness, for setting free our spirits and letting them soar? Too many of us answer that question with a resounding "no" and hunker back down into what we consider to be the safety of our unfulfilled lives. Why? Yes, it's scary, but on the other side of the fear is a freedom the likes of which you've only imagined. Step into it, and step through it. You'll be so glad that you did!

How many times have you let yourself be stopped by either someone else or your own self talk saying "it can't be done"? It can be done, but only you can do it! No more excuses! Grab hold of your dream and don't let it go. Do whatever it takes (within the boundaries of the law and your own integrity) to get it done. No one has written your destiny for you. Don't you forget it!

Half-Truths and Lies

I was just watching CNBC, and someone from Careerbuilder (www.careerbuilder.com) was giving advice to folks who might be currently unemployed. Essentially, he said this: take any job you can find, even if you hate it, and then go back to school to get an education in one of the growing fields of employment, like health care.

NO, NO, NO!!

First of all, if you have to take a job that isn't so ideal because you need to pay the bills, at least *try* to find one that is interesting to you. There are two reasons for this: 1) how authentic and enthusiastic do you think you can be in an interview for a job that you know you're going to hate? and 2) even if you do manage to get hired, what kind of attitude and performance are you going to exhibit when you get up every day going to a job you hate? And how are you going to feel about yourself and your life? If you know what you ultimately want to do, try to get a job in that field, even if it's entry level. Consider it part of your preparation for the future.

Taking the second part of his statement, again, school costs a lot of money. I'm all for investing in yourself, but get clear on what it is you're investing for. If you have no desire to be in the health care industry, so what if it's growing and there are jobs available? Leave those jobs for folks whose true passion it is to deliver quality health care to people who need it. Invest in finding out what you are truly passionate about, and then get the skills you need to do that -- regardless of whether it's a "hot" industry for jobs. You'll be much happier, and not coincidentally more successful and recession-proof if you invest in YOU -- not an industry that the experts say is growing and will provide you with yet another at-the-whim-of-the-economy job.

The best investment you can make in your future financial security is to dig deep, figure out what it is you really love to do, then find out how you can turn that into a business or income stream. Yes, it takes effort, and may require a large investment in learning, just like another college degree. But at the end of your "education," you'll have the freedom that comes from knowing you are in command of your own economy, and you'll get out of bed each day looking forward to the work ahead and knowing that what you're doing makes a difference.

Which sounds better to you? Your future is up to you, not "them." Don't waste another minute or dollar chasing somebody else's dream. Invest in your vision of your future, and the return will be guaranteed.

And speaking of that paycheck, they want to be paid fairly for the work they do, which still isn't happening in most of the bigger corporations. So women are starting their own businesses at a record pace. Privately held businesses owned by women are growing at a rate three times that of other privately held businesses. Women now own 46% of businesses, and we're moving into an era where the analytical (left brain) is more connected to the emotional (right brain).

It's about the economy (and not using words like "stupid"!). It's no coincidence that the world economy is failing. It's a wakeup call to all of us who have been asleep in the relative prosperity of the past decade that we're on the wrong track. People don't want to "sold" by scare tactics and "in your face" marketing. It's about relationships, providing what the customer wants and needs. It's no longer about "he who has the most toys wins" as the popular bumper sticker says. It's about the end of competitiveness and struggle and the beginning of connection and cooperation.

There's more, much more, but those are the highlights. Ali Brown's purpose, what she's here to do, is lead the evolution so we all can adapt and grow and prosper. I don't know about you, but I am thrilled and excited about a world where we may be able to live in peace and harmony. Tolerations

At a recent workshop that was part of my membership in Ali Brown's Millionaire Protege Club (see http://www.mcssl.com/app/aftrack.asp?afid=921513 for more information), Ali asked us "what are you tolerating?" She asked us to think about what in our lives needed fixing or wasn't quite up to what we wanted, but we'd learned to live with it. It could be as simple as a button still needing to be replaced on a pair of pants, or as complicated as a relationship that wasn't supporting who we wanted to become.

I thought about this yesterday, my first day back at the gym in some time. I had been "tolerating" a few extra pounds because I was just "too busy" to maintain an exercise routine. But that toleration cost me a whole lot of wardrobe that I couldn't wear. It took me longer than it should have to get dressed in the morning, since what I had planned to wear didn't fit or didn't look good. It cost me money that I spent on new clothing that would cover up the extra weight. And it cost me feeling good about myself, since I started my day with frustration over my experience getting dressed.

If we look at tolerations in the context of what they cost us, they don't seem quite as benign as we think they are. What are you tolerating, and what is it costing you? Tolerations can snowball into big roadblocks to achieving our dreams. Too many tolerations chip away at us, gradually eroding our sense of well being and happiness, and our confidence in our ability to achieve our dreams.

Make a list of all the things in your life that aren't quite what you'd like them to be. Start with the small stuff to give you a feeling of accomplishment. Sew on the button, wash the windows so you can see the view -- do whatever it takes to create an environment that supports who you are and who you want to be. The cost of tolerations is just too great to be tolerated!!
